William Watson III, center quarterback, receives Arizona Division I football scholarship offer
Springfield Central football quarterback William Watson III received a scholarship offer from the University of Arizona on Wednesday.
Watson spoke by phone with Wildcats defensive coordinator Don Brown and passing coordinator Jimmie Dougherty on Wednesday.
Prior to the call, Watson and the Arizona football program hadn’t communicated much. He and a few staff coaches followed each other on Twitter, but that was about it. Wednesday’s phone call and stock market offer caught him a bit by surprise.
“They just got hot,” Watson said.
Although Watson never told anyone about the program, he knew Brown well. The Golden Eagles quarterback and Brown got to know each other when Brown was the University of Michigan defensive coordinator from 2016-2020.
Brown was instrumental in the Wolverines’ decision to give Watson a scholarship offer in May. Now coach of the Wildcats, his willingness to vouch for Watson’s skills was a big reason Arizona made an offer.
Watson was named to the second-year MaxPreps preseason sophomore team in July and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a second consecutive state championship last season.
