When you’re looking for a day of unplugged fun in nature, there’s no better place in Kentucky than the Bernheim Arboretum. Kentucky’s ultimate family park, Bernheim has it all: an arboretum, hiking trails (including a canopy walk!), an epic playground for the kids, and even giants! If you’re looking for an amazing family day trip to the wonderful Kentucky wilderness, this is it.
Bernheim Arboretum is one of those stunningly beautiful places that seems too spectacular to be real.
But luckily for us in Bluegrass, Bernheim is as real as it gets.
Bernheim Arboretum is a favorite year-round destination, with each season offering new shades of splendour. At this charming arboretum, you can explore over 16,000 acres of natural beauty, for an enchanting getaway in nature.
Nature lovers have plenty to love in Bernheim, home to 8,000 unique varieties of trees and more flora and fauna to count.
The best way to soak up all of this stunning scenery is on one of Bernheim’s many trails. In addition to its paved walking paths, the park literally invites visitors to stroll through the trees. On its famous canopy walk, a boardwalk extends straight into the forest canopy, suspending visitors 75 feet above the forest floor. The experience truly feels like floating in a dreamy, fairy tale forest!

Speaking of fairy tales, the arboretum also has a fun and whimsical side, embracing the fantasy of the imagination. Check out these naughty topiaries…
…and this forest giant! For its 90th anniversary, the Bernheim Arboretum invited Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist, to build three giants of the forest: Mama Loumari and her two children. These whimsical giants have become an iconic Kentucky photo op and are totally fantastic to see in person.
The art-meets-nature experience continues in the children’s play area, which features a human-sized bird’s nest/treehouse created by California-based artist Jayson Fann.
Opened in 2021, the Bernheim Playcosystem is a 10-acre playscape designed to encourage children to connect with nature in fun and hands-on ways. It has proven to be downright irresistible to young Bluegrass…and their parents!
