Grants, NM – Due to extreme fire danger, Phase II fire restrictions are being implemented at El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments. Stage II restrictions include no campfires or smoking outside in the park. These restrictions come into effect as of 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 and will be in effect until rescinded by Superintendent Kelly Fuhrmann. Park officials believe the risk to public safety and structures within the boundaries of the park and nearby communities from a human-caused fire is great enough that these restrictions are necessary.
The following acts will be prohibited from 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2022 in the national monuments of El Malpais and El Morro until further notice:
- Starting, constructing, maintaining, assisting or using fires of any kind, including wood and charcoal campfires in serviced campgrounds or picnic areas, or improved living quarters in permanence. Stoves powered by petroleum or liquid propane gas (LPG) are permitted.
- Smoking, except in a closed vehicle or building.
- Possession or use of any type of fireworks or other pyrotechnic device is prohibited at all times on all federal public lands.
Violation of these prohibited acts is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 and/or imprisonment for up to six months, or both. For information regarding fire restrictions at El Malpais or El Morro National Monuments, call Fire Management Officer Kevin Parrish (505) 285-4641 ext. 235.
