Twitter is is rapidly evolving under its new Elon Musk ownership. On Thursday night, rumors that the social media platform was getting closer to crashing prompted users to write in potential goodbyes in case things go down the drain.

The app is still lagging, but users are scrambling to find alternative methods to communicate. The hashtags #TwitterOFF, #Twittershutdown and #TwitterMigration are trending in the US and Google is looking for alternative platforms, such as Mastadonare on the rise.

Here’s a list of places to go — online and in person — instead of Twitter.

Young people are increasingly relying on visual platforms instead of Twitter. In reality, Research bench says the majority of American teens don’t use Twitter at all. Instead, their time spent on BeReal, Instagram and TikTok increases.

In Philadelphia, locally run Instagram and TikTok accounts cater to a range of interests. From public art accounts like @phillypublicart to the local rapper 2rareboth apps have a little something for everyone.

It would be almost impossible to create a long list, but here are some Philly accounts to help you get started:

Reddit is a popular network that acts as a discussion forum. Users can subscribe to and participate in subreddits – category-based subgroups. Each subreddit has its own moderators in charge. These moderators act as administrators and can determine the rules as well as who can enter and who could be kicked out of the group. Posts can be upvoted or downvoted (like the recent thumbs down feature on Twitter).

Philadelphia’s main subreddit, r/Philadelphia has more than 434,000 subscribers. It’s a place to share news links, talk about neighborhoods and ask for advice. The platform has thousands of other subreddits that users can join based on their interests. For example, the Eagles fans have their own subreddit with 237,000 subscribers. The 76ers, Phillies, Leafletsand union fans also have dedicated subreddits.

Discord and Mastodon are platforms based on separate servers that allow users to communicate with each other. Discord can be compared to Slack or Microsoft Teams. It allows users to exchange voice messages, SMS, calls and files. In contrast, Mastodon is presented as an open-source app that looks like a “Less Toxic Twitter.” It works much like an email account. You choose your server when you sign up and can chat and interact with others based on your interests.

The internet can be a great place to connect and meet new people. But it can also become a festival of dark, toxic slimes. A popular meme on Twitter consisted of people telling themselves to “touch the weed”, implying that they spend too much time online. know your meme says the phrase has become increasingly popular throughout 2021. But you don’t have to take this one at face value. Any kind of weather outside can help fight all that blue light. To go to the movies or a theater production will also bring you closer to a phone-free zone.

Swap your typing hands for touch activity like ceramics or candle making. Throughout the Philadelphia area, there are courses offered for performing arts, fitness, arts and crafts and cooking. With the New Year approaching, it could be the perfect time to take on something new – maybe glass blowing?
