96-year-old Fred Webb Jr. of Potomac, MD passed away on February 14, 2022 after a short illness and a truly enjoyed life.
Born September 19, 1925, in Evansville, Indiana, he got his first job during the Depression by joining the musicians union and playing with various bands in town.
Fred and his trombone enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly before graduating from high school at FJ Reitz High School in 1943. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict in various groups of Marines, all on the state side.
He married Jacqueline Wilson in 1949.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in music education from Evansville College in 1950, he began teaching instrumental music in Rockport, Indiana.
He earned a master’s degree in music from Indiana State Teachers College in 1955.
He began teaching instrumental music at Nappanee High School from 1955 until he became school principal in 1967 and eventually NorthWood High School.
He was one of the leaders in the consolidation of Nappanee High School and Wakarusa High School.
In 1972 he returned to teaching music at Churubusco High School in Whitley County, Indiana and eventually became the vice principal. He earned a specialist education degree from Ball State University in 1977.
He retired from teaching in 1980 and became a health care administrator until his retirement in 1993.
In 2005, he moved from Columbia City, Indiana to Potomac, Maryland to live near his daughter, visit Civil War battlefields, volunteer at the VA hospital, attend concerts, and make new friends. friends.
In his teaching career, he sought to expose his students to the joys of music and the benefits of daily practice. He believed that you are what you repeatedly do.
Throughout his life he enjoyed his work, reading, music of all types, wildlife (especially birdwatching), family genealogy, Civil War history, and anything that involved a good moment.
He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lura (Cole) Webb; his wife, Jacqueline Wilson Webb and one brother, Charles Thomas Webb.
He is survived by his son, Fredric Randall Webb of Chandler, Arizona and Tracey (Richard) Webb Hertling of Chevy Chase, Maryland.
