Honolulu firefighters this afternoon rescued four hikers, who got lost on the Likeke Trail in Kaneohe.
About a dozen firefighters responded to the 911 call which arrived at 10:39 a.m., reporting the lost hikers.
Rescuers arrived at the scene just before 11 a.m. A motor company has secured a landing zone on the Pali golf course. Another group of firefighters went to the Pali Lookout. From there, they set off on foot to find the lost hikers.
HFD said the hikers were found unharmed and it was determined they could walk on their own and did not require air rescue. They were escorted out of the trial by paramedics.
HFD warned that most accidents happen when hikers leave the established trail and disregard warning signs. They also offered the following hiking safety tips:
>> Never walk alone.
>> Familiarize yourself with the area you are about to travel.
>> Bring a cell phone, which can save your life in an emergency. Ensure that
your battery is full before your hike. Packing an external backup battery is recommended.
>> Pack food, snacks and water.
>> Stay hydrated and prepare for the unexpected.
>> Know your physical abilities and your limits; select trails that can be enjoyed
>>Staying on the trail greatly reduces your chances of injury or loss.
