Tourist Spot

Coronado ranked among the best in the United States

SAN DIEGO – San Diego’s Coronado Beach is no stranger to national accolades and earned another spot on the nation’s best beaches list.

Travel + Leisure released its ranking of the 25 best beaches in the United States last month, naming the best spots from New York to Hawaii and Florida – and, of course, America’s Finest City.

Coronado, home to shiny golden sands and the iconic red-roofed “Hotel Del,” ranked third on the list.

It’s one of San Diego’s most memorable stretches of coastline, depicted on countless postcards, travel guides, and other tourist memorabilia. But it’s also popular with locals, from the lucky “island” dwellers to those who take to the Coronado Bridge for a bonfire with friends.

The wide sandy beach literally shimmers with a mineral called mica, and it’s surrounded by seaside resorts and charming streets that are perfect for a long walk or bike ride.

Here are the other top 10 beaches mentioned in the report:

  1. Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
  2. Ocean City, Maryland
  3. Coronado Beach, San Diego, California
  4. Pope’s Beach, Lake Tahoe, Nevada
  5. Clearwater Beach, Clearwater, Florida
  6. Harris Beach, Oregon
  7. Glass Beach, Port Townsend, Washington
  8. Oak Street Beach, Chicago, IL
  9. Carlsmith Beach, Hilo, Hawaii
  10. Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

The full list of the country’s top 25 beaches is available on the Travel + Leisure website.

According to the magazine, the best beach in the country is Poipu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii. This stretch of sand is actually made up of two picturesque beaches separated by a narrow tombolo. One side is called “Baby Beach”, because the water is shallow and sheltered. The other side is for thrill seekers, popular for surfing, snorkeling, windsurfing and boogie boarding.

Travel + Leisure said the quality of sand, waves, level of isolation, accessibility to parking, and even the number of shady trees factored into the ranking.

In February, two beaches in San Diego County also made Tripadvisor’s Best Beaches list. In this ranking, Coronado placed 15th while La Jolla Cove landed ninth.
