CBS Sitcom ‘Mom’ to end after 8 seasons
CBS announced that veteran multi-camera comedy Chuck Lorre Mom, which debuted in September 2013, will officially end after 8 seasons on May 6. The announcement comes after co-director Anna Faris chose not to continue as Christy Plunkett, Allison Janney’s daughter of Bonnie Plunkett, in this final season.
Initially Mom followed Christy de Faris, a single mother of two and recovering alcoholic, who tries to mend the relationship with her now sober mother while dealing with the pregnancy of her teenage daughter Violet (Sadie Calvano). Through it all, Christy and Bonnie lean on their Alcoholics Anonymous support system, including Mimi Kennedy as a wise mother Marjorie.
Halfway through the series, the goal of Mom moved on to Christy and Bonnie’s weekly AA group, including cast additions Jaime Pressly as the rich and materialistic Jill and Kirsten Johnston as the bonkers ex-con Tammy.
“Over the past eight years, we have had the great honor of bringing these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay. “From the start, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcohol and drug addiction that are rarely featured in a network comedy series. Whether it’s the emotional reactions of the live audience at the recording night inside Stage 20, the discussions in the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social networks, we are very proud to know Mom has had a positive impact on so many lives. We are eternally grateful to our brilliant actors and guest stars, our wonderful writers and our amazing team for making this trip with us.
” Since its creation, Mom touched people’s lives by sensitively approaching important but relevant topics with the perfect and skillful touch, ”noted Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment. “Mom redefined what a comedy can be, and we’re proud to have been the host network for this wonderful series. We are deeply grateful to Chuck Lorre and his extremely creative production team, led by Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay, and the incredibly talented cast, led by phenomenal Allison Janney.
This can, Mom should end with around 170 half-hour episodes. It’s unclear if Anna Faris will return for the final episode.
