JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Volunteers are working hard to create the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trail.
It’s along the museum’s walking path, and organizers hope you’ll take advantage of what started in January and help them expand it.
“We’re always looking for new places to ride,” said Dallis Ketchum, volunteer organizer of the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trail.
Ketchum is working with volunteers to create these new places, building the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trail.
It’s right next to the museum walking path, where cyclists and hikers now have another option for outdoor activities.
“What’s been true since the start of the pandemic is that it’s the fastest growing sport in the world, and so there’s a lot of excitement here,” Ketchum said. “We have a lot of volunteer support. The neighborhood was very kind to support us.
Volunteers clear brush to enlarge the trail. One of the four bridges leading to the course is currently a mile long and will span 3 miles across the 37 acres of Greater Belhaven Foundation property.
The foundation and the Tri-County Bike Association are sponsoring the build.
“I’m all about people getting out and spending more time outdoors away from TVs and computers,” Museum Trail Walker James Mathews said.
Mathews and his dog Ella hike the trail almost daily.
“It’s awesome,” Matthews said. “I mean, I’m an outdoors person myself and I love trails, and there aren’t many here in Jackson. It’s awesome ; this brings outdoor activities to Jackson.
Pink flags mark the trail, which will include bridges and signage.
If you would like to volunteer for the build days or to support the efforts, head over to the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trail Facebook page.
“We hope it will be expanded and connected,” Ketchum said. “Our hope is that this brings our community together in a fun outdoor activity.”
