During his speech at the MSC, US Secretary of State Rubio presented a conditional offer of close partnership. He emphasized shared values but made it clear that the US seeks a new path, one that may or may not include Europe, depending on their alignment with American ideals. Rubio's speech echoed the sentiments of the Trump administration, leaving many European leaders feeling uneasy.
And this is the part most people miss... Rubio's visit to Slovakia and Hungary after his speech in Germany was telling. These countries, with their Eurosceptic nationalist leaders, are seen as problematic by Brussels. They oppose sending military aid to Ukraine and have tough migration policies. It's a clear signal that the US is willing to engage with those who share its values, even if it means bypassing traditional allies.
Rachel Ellehuus, Director-General of RUSI, predicts a continental rift. On one side, we have the Nordic and Baltic nations, close to Russia and committed to defense spending. On the other, southern Europe, like Spain, refuses to increase defense budgets as demanded by Trump. France and Britain, while verbally committed, are searching for ways to explain the trade-offs to their voters.
Ellehuus urges Europe to act swiftly, stating, "Europeans need to focus and get to work yesterday. They have a limited time to develop their conventional defense capabilities and stand independently."
US Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby reinforced this message at a NATO meeting in Brussels. He declared that Europe is no longer a US priority, with the Indo-Pacific taking center stage. Colby emphasized a reduced US presence in Europe, becoming more focused and limited.
