Prepare to boldly go where no one has gone before, because 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' is here to captivate and inspire!
Sixty years since the iconic 'Star Trek' first beamed into our lives, Paramount+ has crafted a fresh and exciting addition to the franchise, paying tribute to its rich history while introducing a new generation to the wonders of the 'Star Trek' universe. Creator Gaia Violo has crafted a delightful series centered around a diverse group of young characters, each with their own unique backgrounds and aspirations, as they navigate a galaxy still scarred by past events.
'Starfleet Academy' takes us to the 32nd century, a direct continuation of the beloved 'Star Trek: Discovery'. The United Federation of Planets is still reeling from the devastating 'Burn', an event that shook the very foundation of their fleet. Enter Nahla Ake, portrayed by the talented Holly Hunter, who assumes the role of Captain aboard the USS Athena and Chancellor of the newly established Starfleet Academy. Ake's initial hesitation to embrace a more structured environment is soon challenged by her complex history with one particular recruit, the 21-year-old Caleb Mir, played by the charismatic Sandro Rosta.
Caleb, despite his initial reluctance to return to the classroom, decides to harness his street smarts, engineering prowess, and the resources of Starfleet to embark on a personal mission - finding his missing mother, Alicia, portrayed by the versatile Tatiana Maslany. Joining Caleb in this new class of cadets is a diverse and intriguing bunch. There's Jay-Den Kraag, a pacifist Klingon and aspiring medical officer who forms a bond with the esteemed Doctor (Robert Picardo from 'Star Trek: Voyager'). Darem Reymi, a Khionian and aspiring captain, becomes both Caleb's adversary and roommate, adding layers of complexity to their relationship. Genesis Lythe, a Dar-Sa and daughter of an admiral, gives Darem a run for his money, while Sam, a Kasqian or hologram student, makes history as the first of their kind to attend Starfleet. Cadet Master Lura Thok, part-Klingon and part Jem'Hadar, oversees this eclectic group, providing a stark contrast to the more laid-back Ake.
A special mention goes to Paul Giamatti, who delivers a wickedly fun performance as the space pirate Nus Braka. His character draws intriguing parallels to the fear-mongering and empathy-denying figures that have unfortunately become all too familiar in our society.
The first season, consisting of 10 episodes (with six made available for review), primarily follows an episodic format. However, it also weaves an overarching narrative centered around Caleb's quest to reunite with his mother and the romantic tension he shares with Zarima Sadal, a War Academy student and the daughter of Betazed's president. 'Starfleet Academy' succeeds because of its unique structure, blending the universal appeal of a teen drama with the rich history and lore of 'Star Trek'. The strong cast and its exploration of the realities of living in a galaxy fraught with challenges and dangers keep viewers engaged and invested.
Despite some less-than-stellar digital effects, 'Starfleet Academy' remains a charming and enjoyable watch. Episodes 4 and 5, 'Vox in Excelso' and 'Series Acclimation Mil', stand out as highlights. The show brilliantly captures the angst and exhilaration of young adulthood, focusing on romantic connections, deep-seated rivalries, and the universal desire for belonging, all set against the classic 'Star Trek' backdrop. It's a winning formula that will undoubtedly impress lifelong Trekkies while simultaneously welcoming a new wave of viewers who will connect with these young characters navigating a society that often fails to understand them.
Overall, 'Starfleet Academy' is a thrilling and enjoyable journey. While it may differ from what long-time Trekkies are accustomed to, perhaps that's exactly what the franchise needs to ensure its longevity for another 60 years. To truly reflect our actual world, there must be a place for queer-identifying, multi-heritage, and mixed-race characters. As 'Starfleet Academy' boldly declares, it's time for a new generation to step up and fix the mess they've inherited.
The first two episodes of 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' will premiere on January 15th on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays. Get ready to embark on this exciting adventure and join the new generation of Trekkies!
