The '2' is officially out! Overwatch is shedding its sequel designation as a flurry of new heroes, including the highly anticipated Jetpack Cat, are set to arrive on February 10th.
Blizzard is making some significant waves in the gaming world, and this week, it's Overwatch's turn to take center stage. In a surprising move, the studio has announced that they are dropping the '2' from the game's title, reverting it back to simply Overwatch. This isn't just a cosmetic change; it signifies a renewed vision for the game's future.
"Overwatch is more than just a digit: it's a living universe that keeps growing, keeps surprising, and keeps bringing players together from around the world," the Overwatch team stated. "This year marks a huge turning point in how the development team envisions the future of Overwatch, so we are officially dropping the '2' and moving forward as Overwatch."
Remember when Blizzard made a huge deal about Overwatch 2 being a direct sequel when it launched in October 2022? It ushered in a free-to-play model and a major shift from 6v6 to 5v5 gameplay, a change that removed one tank from each team. This 5v5 format was quite controversial, and interestingly, Blizzard has since walked back on it, reintroducing 6v6 modes.
But here's where it gets a bit wistful: the grand, ambitious vision Blizzard initially had for Overwatch 2, which included RPG-like hero missions with talent trees and long-term progression, never fully materialized. While some of that DNA made its way into the Stadium mode, the planned hero missions were ultimately canceled. We only received one set of co-op story missions, which reportedly didn't perform well commercially, leading Blizzard to pivot its focus back to the player-versus-player (PvP) competitive modes.
And this is the part most people miss: Despite the initial stumbles and shifts in direction, it seems Blizzard has truly steadied the ship over the past couple of years. Many would argue that Overwatch is currently in its best state since its inception.
This year is shaping up to be monumental for Overwatch. May will mark its 10th anniversary, and one can only imagine what special events are in store. Blizzard recently unveiled a substantial roadmap for 2026 during an Overwatch Spotlight showcase, and thankfully, we won't have to wait long for major changes.
Get Ready for an Avalanche of New Heroes!
The upcoming season, launching on February 10th, is poised to be the most significant update since the introduction of the Stadium mode and the perks system last year. The biggest draw? Blizzard is adding five new heroes all at once!
Among them is a character that fans have been dreaming about since 2017 – the legendary Jetpack Cat! Yes, the hero Blizzard experimented with and then shelved is finally making her grand entrance. This support hero boasts a permanent flight ability, allowing her to 'tow' allies through the air while healing them. Her ultimate ability, aptly named Catnapper, is a sight to behold: she dives into the ground, stunning enemies and tethering the closest one, which could be used for a strategic environmental kill. Her primary weapon? Biotic Pawjectiles! It's fantastic to see these more whimsical, Wrecking Ball-esque characters returning to Overwatch.
Joining Jetpack Cat are four other distinct heroes:
- Domina: A zone-control tank with impressive long-range precision.
- Emre: A fast-paced, mobile damage dealer grappling with a conflicting identity due to cybernetic enhancements.
- Mizuki: A support hero who can deploy a healing hat for allies.
- Anran: A high-mobility hero specializing in fire damage, with the ability to self-resurrect using their ultimate.
Anran, like Jetpack Cat, is aligned with the Overwatch faction and will be available for a hero trial starting February 5th. The other three new heroes have ties to the villainous Talon organization. And the hero additions don't stop there; expect another hero to be introduced every couple of months throughout the year with each new season. This means 2026 will see more heroes added to Overwatch than any year since its debut!
A "Story-Driven Era" Begins
The next season marks the dawn of what Blizzard is calling a "new story-driven era" for Overwatch, kicking off with a year-long narrative arc titled The Reign of Talon. All lore, heroes, events, and content released over the next 12 months will revolve around the rise of Talon, promising the first fully connected annual storyline in Overwatch history.
But wait, there's more! Each hero role will be further divided into sub-roles, with heroes in each sub-role sharing a unique passive ability. For example, 'initiator' tanks might gain increased healing while airborne, certain damage heroes could gain wall-hack abilities after damaging enemies, and some supports might have their ultimate charge carry over after use.
Coming soon is also a compelling "meta event" called Conquest. This will be a five-week faction war between Overwatch and Talon, offering a wealth of rewards, including numerous loot boxes and exclusive legendary Echo skins.
Blizzard has also given the Overwatch interface a significant facelift, introducing updated menus, a new hero lobby, a notification hub, and promising much faster navigation. The Stadium mode will receive its own set of updates, including refreshed ability icons and globally-informed recommended builds that update between rounds. A new character, Vendetta, will also be joining the Stadium mode roster.
Beyond the new heroes and gameplay updates, get ready for a delightful Hello Kitty collaboration running for two weeks starting February 10th, featuring themed cosmetics for several heroes. More cosmetic items are on the horizon, including Crimson Wolf weapon skins unlockable with competitive points, and special Valentine's Day and rainy day themed items. Cosmetics from the past six seasons will be integrated into loot boxes, and mythic cosmetics for Mercy, Juno, and Mei will be available in Season 1.
Looking even further ahead, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Overwatch is slated to launch alongside Season 2 in April. Some heroes will be receiving their second mythic skins, including Ana and Genji, with Genji, Hanzo, and Sojourn also set to get mythic weapon skins. Two new maps, including a Japan Night map, are on their way for the main modes, alongside the return of post-match accolades.
