The departure of Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss has sparked a heated debate among college football fans and analysts. As the news spread, a crucial question emerged: How would this impact Ole Miss' chances in the College Football Playoff?
On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee chair, Hunter Yurachek, addressed this very issue. He revealed that the committee had discussed the potential impact of Kiffin's departure on Ole Miss' standing. However, Yurachek made it clear that the committee's decision was not influenced by Kiffin's move to LSU.
But here's where it gets controversial... Yurachek stated that the committee's selection protocols consider the availability of coaches and players. They discussed not only Ole Miss but also other teams facing coaching changes, like Oregon, North Texas, and Tulane. Yet, he emphasized that these changes didn't significantly impact the rankings because the committee had not witnessed Ole Miss or Oregon in games without their respective coaches.
"We talked about it, but in the end, we don't have any games where Ole Miss played without their head coach. So, it didn't affect our rankings this week," Yurachek explained.
To support his argument, Yurachek referenced the 2023 Florida State Seminoles situation. After Jordan Travis' season-ending injury, Florida State missed out on the College Football Playoff. In that case, the committee had the opportunity to evaluate Florida State's performance without their starting quarterback. However, with Ole Miss, the committee hasn't seen the team play without Lane Kiffin as head coach.
"The Florida State example is a good reference point. We can't evaluate what Ole Miss would look like without Kiffin because we haven't seen it. We can only go off what we know, and that's an 11-1 Ole Miss team," Yurachek added.
So, the question remains: Should the committee consider potential future scenarios when ranking teams? Or should they solely focus on the present performance and available data?
What's your take on this? Do you think the committee made the right call, or should they have factored in the potential impact of Kiffin's departure? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
