In the world of cricket, the transition from the high-octane Indian Premier League (IPL) to the more strategic and patient game of Test cricket is a challenging one. This is especially true for spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, who are now gearing up for India's one-off Test against Afghanistan.
Kuldeep, along with three other spinners, including the uncapped Suthar and Dubey, is part of a young and relatively inexperienced squad. With the absence of regular Test players like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, the pressure is on for this group to step up and deliver.
The Challenge of Switching Gears
"It's a tough transition," Kuldeep shared in an interview. "Going from the aggressive, fast-paced IPL to the more calculated red-ball cricket requires a mental shift." He further explained that in T20 cricket, spinners are often on the attack, aiming to dismiss batters quickly. However, in Test matches, batters have more time to settle, and the game demands a different approach.
Kuldeep's performance in IPL 2026 was not his best, picking up only ten wickets in twelve matches. But this gave him the opportunity to focus on his red-ball skills, and he made the most of it.
Preparation and Mentorship
"I was fortunate to have some extra time," he said. "I practiced with the red ball for at least ten to fifteen days, getting a feel for it." Kuldeep understands the importance of preparation and is confident that his teammates are equally prepared, even those who are joining straight after the IPL final.
As a senior member of the spin department, Kuldeep takes his mentorship role seriously. He wants the newcomers to feel comfortable and supported. "When new players join, it's crucial to make them feel at ease," he explained. "They should see you as a partner, someone they can turn to for guidance."
Experience vs. Regular Play
While the Indian squad may lack international experience in terms of Test matches, Kuldeep believes that regular domestic play, such as the Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy, has prepared them well. "These young players have been consistently playing red-ball cricket," he said. "They understand the game, the conditions, and the tactics required."
In terms of tactics, Kuldeep emphasized the importance of patience in Test cricket. "Our conversations as a spin group revolve around basic strategies," he shared. "Lengths, pace, and understanding the surface are key. But above all, it's about being patient and trusting the process."
A New Era for Indian Spin
With the retirement of R Ashwin and the resting of Jadeja, India's spin department is entering a new era. Kuldeep, along with Washington Sundar and the uncapped duo of Dubey and Suthar, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Indian spin bowling.
"It's an exciting time," Kuldeep concluded. "We have a talented group of spinners, and I'm confident we'll do well. The key is to stay focused, keep learning, and support each other."
As the team prepares for their Test against Afghanistan, the world of cricket watches with anticipation, eager to see how this young spin group performs on the international stage.
