Free Air Pollution Alerts in West Midlands | Protect Your Health (2026)

Breathing easy shouldn't be a luxury, but a right. Now, residents of the West Midlands are getting a crucial heads-up about the air they breathe. The Clean Air West Midlands website is now offering free alerts, delivered via voicemail, email, or text, to warn people of high air pollution levels in their local areas.

This initiative provides practical advice on how to protect yourself when the air quality dips. It's especially vital for those with long-term health conditions such as asthma, coronary heart disease, and lung cancer. But here's where it gets really interesting: the alerts are powered by a network of 90 air quality sensors strategically placed around the region, including outside homes, schools, businesses, hospitals, and sports centers.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, who launched the service on Tuesday, highlighted the devastating impact of dirty air. He stated that it is unacceptable that 2,300 people in the region die prematurely each year due to air pollution.

But this is not the only action being taken. The authorities are also working on improving air quality through initiatives like electric buses, new walking and cycling routes, and projects to restore green spaces. What do you think about these efforts? Do you believe these measures are enough to combat the problem, or should more be done?
