DVA Updates: Streamlined Access to Health Services & Fee Reminders (2026)

NewsGP - In Practice: DVA Updates and Important Reminders

A Quick Update on DVA's Financial Approval Process

In an effort to streamline healthcare services for veterans and reduce administrative burdens, the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) has made a significant change to its financial approval system. As of January 1, 2026, certain health services no longer require prior financial approval from the DVA before treatment can be provided to eligible Veteran Card holders.

This update aims to enhance access to timely treatment for veterans. The affected services will be added to the relevant DVA fee schedule, and registered providers can claim these services through their usual channels. For a comprehensive list of the new services, visit DVA's website.

A Word of Caution: Counterfeit Rabies Vaccine in India

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has issued a warning to healthcare professionals about a counterfeit rabies vaccine, Abhayrab, which has been circulating in India since 2023. The fake vaccine differs in formulation, packaging, labeling, and manufacturing from the registered vaccine. People who received the counterfeit vaccine may not be fully protected against rabies, and ATAGI advises them to seek replacement doses for adequate protection.

While the risk of adverse effects for Australian travelers to India is low, ATAGI is taking a precautionary approach due to the potential severity of the impact. Travelers who received the rabies vaccine in India from November 1, 2023, onwards, and were administered one or more doses of Abhayrab (batch number KA24014 or unknown), or if the administered vaccine brand is unknown, may be affected. For more information, refer to ATAGI's statement.

DVA Fee Schedule Reminder: Stay Updated!

To ensure providers have the most up-to-date information, the DVA confirms that the fee schedules published on its website are the authoritative source for current applicable provider fees. General practitioners (GPs) should refer to these schedules when encountering fee information from other sources to ensure they are using the authorized fees. This helps maintain consistency and clarity in fee information.

CPD Subsidy for GPs: Enhance Your Skills

The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) is offering a limited number of $300 Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) CPD subsidies to support GPs in completing FPS CPD and maintaining their FPS registration. GPs are required to complete six hours of FPS CPD every three years to maintain their registration. This CPD focuses on educating GPs about FPS interventions approved under the Better Access Initiative and/or mental disorders treatable under the same initiative.

Eligible GPs will receive a $300 reimbursement once they complete an accredited FPS CPD activity. For more details, email mentalhealth@racgp.org.au.
