Unveiling the Unseen: Bristol Foster Carer's Journey through Shadows and Support
In the quiet corridors of Bristol, a remarkable story of dedication and resilience is unfolding. John Stokes, a foster carer with a 35-year career, has dedicated his life to nurturing young lives, often in the shadows of society's spotlight. His new book, 'A Life In The Shadowlands', co-written with one of his foster children, offers a captivating glimpse into the challenges and rewards of fostering.
The Unseen Heroes
Stokes' journey began in 1990 when he started working at a children's home. He recalls, "We had some fun times, some horrendous times as well. I wanted to get across how we live in the shadows - foster carers are all around, but most people don't recognise them unless their kids play up."
The confidentiality rules, he explains, create a veil of secrecy around foster carers. "We have very strict confidentiality rules," he says. "So most people don't know if you're a carer or not."
A pivotal moment in his fostering journey was when a boy at the children's home, involved in car theft, asked him to foster him. "That young lad is now a grandfather," Stokes reveals. "I'm considered great-grandfather to his grandkids, which is lovely. We sorted ourselves out and stayed in touch."
The Complex Web of Support
Stokes' commitment goes beyond the immediate care of the children. He notes, "What tends to happen is they get back in touch, especially if they're having a crisis, because once they leave care, youngsters don't tend to get the support they really need."
His work has extended to supporting boys from Syria, Turkey, and Iraq seeking asylum. In 2019, he successfully campaigned for the Home Office to allow Samet, trafficked into the UK from Albania at 15, to stay in the country. "It's not just a child," he emphasizes, "it's all the baggage that surrounds the child."
The Commitment and Reward
Stokes urges anyone considering fostering to contact their council, highlighting the need for more carers. However, he also warns of the significant commitment involved. "You've got to have a lot of energy and really like a challenge," he says.
As readers delve into 'A Life In The Shadowlands', they'll discover the profound impact foster carers have on the lives of vulnerable youth, shedding light on the often-unseen dedication and challenges of this noble profession.
